Long Shackle Padlocks for Thick Hasps and Awkward Fittings
A long-shackle padlock solves a simple geometry problem: the hasp on your gate, shed or toolbox is thicker, recessed or further from the frame than a standard shackle can reach. Rather than forcing a short lock to strain, or leaving the fitting loose, a long shackle closes cleanly and sits flush.
Common shackle lengths
| Length | Inches | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 7/8" (22mm) | Flush hasps and small lockers |
| Long | 1-3/4" (44mm) | Standing hasps, chained gates |
| Extra long | 2-3/8" (60mm) | Recessed gate hardware, double-locking |
How to measure before you buy
Close the hasp as if locking it, then measure the vertical gap between the two plates. Add a few millimetres for the lock body. If the gap is under 25mm, a standard shackle fits; 25–50mm needs long; over 50mm needs extra-long. Ordering a shackle that is too long is usually harmless — too short means the lock will not close.
Security note on long shackles
A longer shackle exposes more steel to a bolt cutter, so a long-shackle lock should always use a hardened shackle. For maximum protection on a recessed fitting, pair a hardened extra-long shackle with a laminated body.
Keyed-alike long shackle sets
The SEPOX long-shackle range runs from 2-pack keyed-alike sets for a single gate to 24-pack sets for a whole property — one key opens every lock, which is the practical choice when a site owner manages many fittings.
Frequently asked
Does a long shackle make a padlock less secure? Slightly, if the steel is unhardened. With a hardened boron shackle the difference is negligible for normal threats.
Can I use a long shackle padlock indoors? Yes, but a standard shackle is cheaper and equally effective on flush fittings.
What is keyed-alike? A set where every lock opens with the same key — ideal for gates, sheds and toolboxes on one property.
Double-locking and chained fittings
A long shackle is also the tool for locking two things together: a gate plus a chain, a shed door plus a bracket, a toolbox handle plus a hasp. In these setups the shackle passes through two openings, and only a long shackle will thread both. Measure the combined thickness of every item the shackle must pass through, then add clearance.
Hardened steel is non-negotiable on long shackles
Because a long shackle exposes a longer run of steel, a soft shackle is an open invitation to a bolt cutter. Every long-shackle model in this collection uses a hardened shackle precisely so that the extra length does not become the weak point.
Long shackle with a cover, for outdoor gates
Recessed gate hardware is usually outdoors, so pair the extra-long shackle with a weatherproof cover and a brass or stainless cylinder. That combination — hardened long shackle, laminated body, sealed keyway — is the standard spec for an exposed garden or driveway gate.
